The case has been featured on BBC One's Julian Fellowes Investigates. Gardiner was tried twice for the murder but each time the jury failed to reach a verdict. At the time it was alleged that the murderer was a preacher of the Primitive Methodist Chapel named William Gardiner, who was having an affair with the victim.
